At our "On the Move" Vacation Bible School, we will journey to various places instrumental to the Civil Rights Movement and learn how God's spirit gave momentum to the movement and its people, drawing them towards greatness through blessing, justice, truth, and reconciliation. The lessons of "On the Move" promote God's power for life in building up the community, as persons are reconciled to one another and to Jesus Christ.
This year’s hip-hop theme will be integrated into every area of VBS, from the publicity through the worship service and the classroom teaching. Every activity the children are part of during the day will reflect the theme and the day’s Bible Study story. The curriculum focuses on how God’s spirit gave momentum to the Civil Rights Movement in different places, drawing the people of God toward greatness through blessing, justice, truth, and reconciliation. The lessons promote God’s power for life in building up the community, as persons are reconciled to one another and to Jesus Christ. “On the Move” Vacation Bible School 2009 features activity centers that cater to all different learning styles through contemporary Christian hip hop music, daily Bible stories, multicultural heritage lessons, theme-related crafts, snacks, movement, and more.
“On the Move” is a Christian educational resource that is ideal for VBS. From one generation to another, this program focuses on the lessons of liberation and how movement and singing helps to effect change, moving us forward in faith, in self, in community, and in God. Participants will:
1. Sing the songs and hear the stories of freedom
2. Learn to stand up and pray for injustice
3. Gain more understanding that the Way of Jesus Christ is love for all people
4. Be inspired to move forward in faith and life.
Families of children enrolled in the school will be invited to the Final Program on Friday, July 3rd, at 11:00 a.m. The purpose of the Final Program is for the staff to get to know the parents of the children, especially those who are prospects for our Sunday School and Church Membership. This is also a chance to let the parents better understand the work that their children have been doing through the week. Our focus is clearly outreach. Our adjusted Thursday schedule will allow as many children as possible to participate before they may leave for the holiday weekend. The Final Program will begin with the Worship Celebration, including brief remarks from Griot Jim Turner, after which we will share slides of the children during the VBS activities.
We will have an open house after the Worship Celebration to allow the parents to visit the children’s VBS rooms, meet the staff and volunteers, and view some of the projects the children have done. We will serve refreshments during the open house. Because our teaching time is precious during VBS, we have scheduled Activity time identified as “Drama” when the Griot will visit each classroom to prepare a special presentation for the Final Program. The slides will allow the parents to get a good grasp of what their children have learned. Also, the children will have a visual memory of their experiences.
