The Holsey Chapel Women's Chorale has as its mission the performance of quality repertoire for women's voices and the creation of a community of women dedicated to performing music by, for, and about women.
Religion continues to hold an enormous significance for us. We have forged The Women's Chorale from a rich array of talent to become an integral part of special celebrations and services at Holsey Chapel. Our form of sacred music takes shape within the religious experience providing an especially rich lens for witnessing the ways we make sense of modern life. Our music is a style of sacred singing marked by an upbeat tempo and by intense rhythms generated through percussive instrumental accompaniment and holds particular resonance. Our music is a critical arena in which we contend with questions about the nature of faith, as well as the shape and meaning of racial identity. Our music illuminates some of the many roles we take on in religious life. While men have traditionally dominated most forms of African American music, including the evolving tradition of the gospel quartet, we are important innovators in gospel and music ministry. We seek to create a supportive training ground where women can secure critical music skills. We use our musical form to testify to our religious convictions, sustain fellowship, and pursue missionary work. In the process, we help shape the contours of music ministry. The HC Women's Chorale is about musical evangelism of sanctified women.
As African American women in the 21st century, we have a voice that is unlike any in history. We have the opportunity to tell our stories and the stories of many generations of our sisters. For thousands of years, our voices around the world have too often been muted by culture or tradition, deprived of the opportunity to receive an education, to own a business, to have political opinions, to choose a marriage partner, to speak publicly. And in every time and place, we have responded to this enforced silence by lifting our voices in song. Even in the lullabies we sang to our children, our stories of heartache and hope are preserved. As long as women have song, our voices will not be stilled.
Artistic Director Charles Coney leads The Women’s Chorale along with the HC Director of Music Annie Pearl Stepherson.
